31% of cases opened by Unia in 2024 concerned racial discrimination

In Belgium, more than 31% of cases opened by Unia, the center for equal opportunities, concerned racial discrimination in 2024, amounting to nearly two cases per day (643 in total). These discriminations primarily affect employment, housing, healthcare, and social life. The employment sector is the most affected, representing 29% of cases, with instances of discriminatory hiring refusals, unfair dismissals, harassment, and discrimination related to foreign-sounding names. In housing and healthcare, 19% of cases were opened, revealing a lack of respect towards non-Belgian patients and a higher rate of healthcare postponement among victims of racism. Regarding social life, also accounting for 19% of cases, Unia noted incidents of hate in public spaces. To combat these discriminations, Unia advocates for targeted political actions, increased awareness, and more control measures to fight structural racism in Belgium.
