Silvia Orriols, mayor of Ripoll in Catalonia (northeastern Spain) and member of the far-right nationalist party ‘Alianca Catalana’ in the local Catalan parliament, has been fined 10,000 euros for insulting Muslims during a statement on the ‘8TV’ television channel. She claimed that Muslims living in the region constituted a ‘threat to Catalan identity’.
The fine was imposed by the autonomous Catalan government in accordance with a law aimed at combating Islamophobia and xenophobia in the region. This sanction is a strong symbol against the normalization of Islamophobic statements by the political class.
