Germany: Launch of the Islamophobic Incidents Reporting Center

The local authorities of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany have announced the creation of the first Islamophobic incidents reporting center, MEDAR, which will open in spring 2025.

This initiative follows a sharp increase in Islamophobic acts, with 269 incidents reported in 2023, twice as many as the previous year.

The MEDAR center, which will also record incidents targeting foreigners, aims to combat Islamophobia and address the rise of xenophobia and the far-right. This project is part of the local authorities’ efforts to strengthen the fight against all forms of racism and discrimination, and to protect Muslim communities in Germany.
