Online Hate: One Year Suspended Sentence for French Defendant

On Monday, March 17, 2025, a 51-year-old man appeared before the Strasbourg Criminal Court for incitement to hatred and glorification of crimes against humanity.

In November 2023, he had sent hateful emails to about thirty mosques and media outlets in France, believing he was protected by a VPN.

The defendant, residing in Fegersheim, admitted to sending two particularly violent emails but denied being racist or Islamophobic. According to him, his messages were an attempt to ‘alert’ against what he perceived as a threat, justifying his statements by expressing his fears for the future of his children and grandchildren.

The court sentenced this man to one year of suspended prison with probation, emphasizing the severity of his acts of hatred and discrimination.
