Daycare Near Lyon: Fired for Her Headscarf, Parents Mobilize

About thirty parents have mobilized to denounce the dismissal of Sara, an early childhood assistant, who was removed from the Perle de Soie daycare in Vaulx-en-Velin (Rhône-Alpes) for wearing a headscarf upon her return from maternity leave.

Dismissed for “gross misconduct” on March 21, 2025, without notice or compensation, Sara had been working since 2022 without any professional complaints.

According to her, the decision is directly linked to her choice to wear a headscarf since October 2024. A petition signed by parents highlights the violence of this decision against an “irreproachable” professional.

The management group invokes a “secularism charter” imposing a ban on religious symbols. However, parents mention a previous case of tolerance, and management had even proposed a turban as an alternative.

Sara has contacted a lawyer and is considering legal action.
