Montpellier: Rhany Slimane Files Complaint After Islamophobic Attacks

On January 17, Rhany Slimane, an activist from La France Insoumise (LFI, French left-wing party), filed a complaint for racist and Islamophobic comments received on social media after an interview in Midi Libre.

The activist, victim of attacks targeting his North African origin and Muslim faith, was described as an “LFI Nazi who will transform Montpellier into an Islamist caliphate” by internet users, who also mentioned “Sharia in 15 years in Montpellier”.

These hateful comments are part of a dynamic of increasing stigmatization of Muslims in France, exacerbated by persistent Islamophobia in certain political discourses.

Accompanied by his lawyer, Ms. Flora Labourier, Rhany Slimane emphasized the importance of denouncing these acts and stated that such collective mobilization was necessary to fight against the normalization of racism and Islamophobia.
