A regular target of racist and Islamophobic insults in Dutch stadiums, Moroccan FC Volendam striker Bilal Ould-Chikh has announced his intention to leave the Netherlands after his career.
In an interview with NU.nl, he confides that he is experiencing real psychological trauma:
“This feeling of being different has never left me.”
At 27, he recounts being called a “dirty cancerous Muslim” or hearing: “It’s a shame that someone of your kind scored.”
He deplores the extent of racism in Dutch football and states: “After my career, I’m moving to Morocco. There, I feel more at home than in the Netherlands.“
