Yesterday, arson broke out at the entrance to the Assounna mosque in Amiens (northern France) during dawn prayers. Alerted by the smell of burning, worshippers went outside to discover the back door of the mosque on fire.
The fire, probably arson, was started with pieces of carpet found near the mosque. Nearby, worshippers found matches and firelighters. An investigation has been launched following a complaint by the association, but no suspects have yet been arrested.
Five years after Bayonne, the Amiens mosque joins the long list of mosques attacked in France. The political and judicial response must be commensurate with the seriousness of these crimes.
