France: CNEWS Channel Fined €50,000 for Islamophobic Comments

The French television channel CNEWS has been fined €150,000 for comments made during broadcasts, announced ARCOM (Regulatory Authority for Audiovisual and Digital Communication) on Thursday, November 14.

One of these comments concerns the Muslim community in Pau (southwestern France) with these terms:

Muslim parents pressured the management of a school in Pau to make prayer rooms available to students during a school trip to the Pyrenees.

ARCOM determined that “the facts in question, which proved to be inaccurate, had not been sufficiently verified and were not accompanied by verbal precautions.”

This sanction from ARCOM is a strong message sent to all public figures who might be tempted to spread false and Islamophobic ideas in the media.
