Geneva: Far-Right Fails to Ban Full-Coverage Swimwear in Public Pools

The UDC (Swiss People’s Party), a far-right Swiss party, has failed in its attempt to ban full-coverage swimwear in Geneva’s public pools. The Grand Council rejected their proposed law with 54 votes against, 33 in favor, and 3 abstentions.

Guy Mettan (UDC) justified the proposal citing concerns about secularism and communitarianism, supported by Le Centre and a portion of the PLR (Liberal Radical Party).

However, voices were raised against this initiative, such as that of Green Party member Cédric Jeanneret, who emphasized that the only criteria for pool access should be hygiene and practicality, not cultural or religious considerations. “It’s not up to men to dictate how women should dress,” he added.

This failure marks a victory in the fight against attempts at religious stigmatization and Islamophobia.
