That’s more than one in two Luxembourg Muslims. This figure comes from the latest alarming report by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) on the situation of Muslims in Europe.
The findings of this survey of some 10,000 Muslims across thirteen EU countries show that Islamophobia is a daily and growing reality for millions of European citizens.
On a European scale, 50% of respondents claim to have experienced Islamophobic discrimination in the last five years; in Luxembourg, the situation is even worse. Even more Luxembourg Muslims have been discriminated against when looking for work, housing, in the street or by the police.
To improve the situation in Luxembourg, but also in all the other countries of the European Union, the EU Fundamental Rights Agency proposes a series of recommendations, including the strengthening of national anti-discrimination laws and the introduction of national action plans to combat racism.
These recommendations are to be welcomed, but must now be put to the test in a Europe where the situation of Muslims is exacerbated “by the dehumanizing rhetoric observed throughout the continent”, according to Sirpa Rautio, President of the Agency.
