Luxembourg: Sports Minister confirms authorization of covering jerseys

On August 24, three women bathing in full-coverage swimsuits were banned from a swimming pool in Remich (a commune in southeastern Luxembourg), creating a scandal that spread beyond the country’s borders.

As a result, majority MP Nancy Arendt (Christian Social political group) submitted a written question to Sports Minister Georges Mischo (Christian Social political group), asking him to clarify the regulations governing access to municipal swimming pools. In Luxembourg, there is no law forbidding the wearing of revealing clothing in public bathing areas, leaving it up to each bathing area to decide.

Yesterday, the Minister for Sport responded to the MP’s question, pointing out that as long as the clothing chosen does not compromise the safety of the user or the hygiene of the premises, there is no reason to exclude the person. This is the same position adopted in 2022 in response to a similar question.

However, this incident will not prompt the government to introduce a bill, leaving it up to each bathing area to check whether or not the outfits worn comply with health and safety regulations.
