Britt Huybrechts, 24, a Vlaams Belang member of the House of Representatives in the Belgian Federal Parliament, is facing criticism for statements she made in April on Vlaams Belang TV, the far-right party’s YouTube channel.
In a debate on immigration, broadcast on the party’s YouTube channel, the MP, then a candidate, said: “In vacation villages, you always find yourself harassed by a certain group of youngsters. It’s never the nice little Johans, but rather the naughty little Mohammeds who come looking for trouble. “
Huybrechts didn’t stop there, however, and also touched on the subject of development aid: according to her, Belgium“prefers to give money to the Third World rather than to its own people.” She added:“By acting in this way, the Belgian government is not only importing the Third World through immigration, it is also making Belgium a Third World country.”
Britt Huybrechts is no newcomer to politics. A former president of the Leuven branch of the Katholiek Vlaams Hoogstudentenverbond (KVHV), a conservative, nationalist student movement, she first worked for the local N-VA before joining the Vlaams Belang. Following the June 9 elections, she is now a member of the Belgian Federal Parliament for her first term.
