Roubaix: An Association Acquitted on Appeal After Accusations of ‘Muslim Proselytism’

The association ‘Ambitions et initiatives pour la réussite’ (AAIR) was acquitted on appeal on January 13 after being accused of misappropriating public funds to provide Koranic education under the guise of Arabic language classes. The association, which had received grants from the city to support young people dropping out of school, was suspected of not respecting the principle of secularism.

The Court of Appeal of Douai ruled that there was insufficient evidence to support the accusations of breach of trust. The former president and other members of the association were also tried but were all acquitted, ending a case that had fueled tensions over the use of public funds for religious purposes.

The mayor of Roubaix, Guillaume Delbar, who was also prosecuted for negligence in monitoring grants, was acquitted in this case.
