Spanish mayor fined €10,000 for insulting Muslims

Silvia Orriols, mayor of Ripoll in Catalonia (north-east Spain) and member of the far-right nationalist “Alianca Catalana” party in Catalonia’s local parliament, has been fined 10,000 euros for insulting Muslims in a statement on the “8TV” television channel. She claimed that Muslims living in the region were a “threat to Catalan identity”.

The fine was imposed by the Catalan autonomous government in accordance with a law designed to combat Islamophobia and xenophobia in the region. This sanction is a strong symbol against the normalization of Islamophobic comments by the political class.
