The Jonathas Institute, a center for study and action against anti-Semitism, has published the results of the first survey ever carried out in Belgium on the perception of minorities, particularly Jewish communities.
Some Belgian media have focused on singling out anti-Semitism emanating specifically from Muslims, but the study reveals that anti-Semitic prejudice is present in all sections of Belgian society, and antipathy towards Jews concerns 14% of Belgians.
While the focus of the study is on perceptions of Jews and anti-Semitism, it also provides important information on other ethno-racial, sexual and religious minorities. According to the results, Muslims are the minority group that arouses the most antipathy among Belgians: 32% of respondents say they have antipathy for Muslims, 29% for Roma, 22% for Turks, 19% for North Africans, and 17% for foreigners.
The study highlights a worrying trend of Islamophobia and xenophobia in Belgian society.
