Switzerland: In 2024, the Number of Online Racism Reports Exploded, with Islamophobia Leading

In 2024, the Swiss platform “Report online racism” launched by the Confederation to report racist content on the internet recorded a 60% increase in reports compared to the previous year. Among these reports, Islamophobia leads with 79 cases, a number that has almost tripled compared to 2023. Antisemitism and anti-Black racism follow closely, with 77 and 66 reports respectively.

Social networks, particularly Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter), are regularly pointed out for their role in spreading these hate speeches. However, comment sections in online media are also prime locations for such discriminatory content.

The reports concern not only hateful comments but also shocking staged scenes, evoking for example the Holocaust or slavery. Although the majority of these cases are difficult to prosecute, 41 have been brought before Swiss authorities for discrimination and incitement to hatred.

This situation highlights the worrying rise of Islamophobic, racist, and antisemitic discourse on the web, requiring increased vigilance and a strong response to counter the normalization of these ideologies.
